Service Provision In The Emergency Room

By Elisabeth Lawson

An emergency room Houston area offers patients a warm and caring environment when they are ill or injured. Customer care is high on the agenda for all staff, ensuring that all patients are treated with respect and their dignity preserved. These type of facilities offer highly trained and skilled medical personnel, covering a wide range of medical disciplines.

An emergency service is available around the clock every day throughout the year. There will be times throughout the year, when adjustments to staffing levels are necessary, usually to accommodate staff absence and holidays. However, it is a management responsibility to ensure that patient access to treatment and services should never be compromised.

It would make all emergency departments obsolete if we could for tell when we were going to need their services. However, as that is just a pipe dream, anyone requiring immediate medical attention can bypass the referrals procedures and take them-self directly to the emergency facility for treatment. Receiving immediate treatment can help to aid recovery.

On arrival patients are usually met by the receptionist or administration staff, responsible for completing their registration paperwork. Occasionally a patient or someone accompanying them is unable to provide all the necessary background information. It can help greatly if the patient carries a list of their current medical conditions, treatments and medications they are receiving and contact details for their general practitioner or specialist.

You can expect to be assessed initially by a highly skilled triage nurse. He or she will assess your condition and allocate you to a waiting list category, of high, medium and low risk. The doctors will attend to patients based on their risk factor. Unfortunately, for those in the low risk category, they may need to wait longer for attention, if there is an influx of high risk cases.

Patients with suspected broken or fracture injuries can be sent for x-rays by the triage nurse. Otherwise the patient would need to be assessed by the doctor and then sent for x-ray, before being seen again by the doctor to receive the results of their films. If required they would then have to proceed to the plaster room to have a cast put on.

Depending on the nature and extent of injuries or illness, patients may need to be admitted into the hospital for further medical treatment and perhaps surgery. If the emergency room Houston is attached to the hospital, the patient can be admitted direct to a ward. If the service is independent, they will have close ties with local hospitals who will accept their emergency cases.
