A Learning Curve: What Skin Mole Removal Procedures Entail

By Frank Cairo

There are so many reasons why people subject themselves to various procedures for removing skin moles from their bodies. People even resort to various mole removal procedures to satisfy their cosmetic need to be mole-free. In fact, majority of these procedures are carried out for cosmetic purposes. There are, however, some cases where clinical reasons prevail, as when the moles are found by doctors to be cancerous. Aside from cancer risks, there are also other health risks and dangers posed by moles when they are not removed.

The medical professional who is most authorized to conduct skin mole removal procedures is the dermatologist, who happens to be a skin specialist. However, it is not limited to them, because other general medical practitioners can do it, too. General medical practitioners are also able to carry out these procedures, which qualify as minor surgical procedures. Dermatologists are often turned to by these practitioners in the case of moles that are deep-seated or difficult to remove. In the event that the moles are found to be potentially cancerous, they should be referred to oncologists. Oncologists are the doctors who specialize in the branch of medicine concerned with cancers.

The use of anesthesia is often employed when these procedures are carried out. That means you don't have to be afraid of experiencing any pain because the anesthesia will numb it. This means the patient will remain conscious all throughout the procedure because there was a local anesthesia administered which doesn't make you lose consciousness. The area where the local anesthetic was applied will be the only parts of the body that will not feel anything. Of course, the anesthesia wears off after the procedures, at which point the wounds incurred in the course of the procedures can cause some pain. But in anticipation of this, the doctors who carry out these procedures normally give the patients some painkillers to combat the pain when it comes up. There are cases where wounds could appear. These, however, will heal after a few days. It is also possible that hospitalization would be required in case the wounds do not heal and actually become worse. But do not worry, because that rarely happens.

There are cases where doctors performing procedures aimed at removing skin moles opt to stitch the wounds incurred during such procedures. This happens in the case of deep-seated moles because of the exposure of some sensitive tissue after the removal of the moles. The wound would also probably require stitching if the moles are so large that the skin mole removal procedure had to be performed using large and long incisions.

Scarring is a probability when you choose a skin mole removal procedure that involves incisions. Make sure the patient is apprised of this fact prior to the procedure. There is bound to be a tradeoff if you are going for skin mole removal and the patient has to be fully aware of this. The moles are likely to be gotten rid of, but in their place, we are likely to have scars. So it becomes a question of figuring out which is better between living with moles or living with scars.
