Fitness Is a Learned Talent

By Andrew van Ness

Maybe you've seen some of those really muscular guys where you work out who are fully ripped and you said to yourself "Wow! Those dudes are tough!"

Well, what you may not realize is that, yes, these men are indeed powerful in specific areas. Nonetheless they do not truly have a type of versitile strength that may be used in pretty much any area of life.

Rather they often are only good at doing the fixed motions that you see them do at the gym, whether or not that's bicep curls, bench presses, or deadlifts.

It makes you actually ask yourself though, what's the point of all this?

I mean fitness isn't just about something you do in the gym. You need to be stronger in a broader respect than merely being able to do an army press or some other exercise.

The end goal of fitness and strength isn't the praise of all the other sweaty guys at the gym. The ultimate result of all this effort is to be powerful in your everyday life. This is the reason why I like gymnastic rings.

When you get right down to it, you could doubtless care less about how many reps you can do of this exercise or that exercise. What you really want is to be in a position to rely on your body when you need it to be there, whether that's at work, while you are playing with your kids, or when you're playing soccer or basketball with your buddies on the weekend.

But so many people fall victim to the phantom of gym performance. The reps, the "warrior" mindset, the weight, the heavy metal playing while you are fighting to get that one last rep in.

Do not get me wrong. It's important to have a good measure of progress when you're strength training, but it's criticlal to not become confused about what you're really attempting to accomplish from all your working out. It is a common example of not losing the forest among the trees.

So what does this mean in your everyday life? This means that you shouldn't put so much importance on consistently attempting to squeeze in more reps, you should not push yourself to the very edge of incurring some kind of injury, and you shouldn't feel guilty or embarrassed if you need to take a little time to progress at your own pace.

Remember, fitness is something you try to build so you can enjoy the wonders of life and use your body when you must use it. So long as you have the ability do that, then there is really little need for all the fake machismo of the gym. Fitness is about having a good time and enjoying life.

Don't lose touch with the big picture, and remember to not let your life pass you by while you're exercising in the gym.
